Academic Task 1: the overview

The sentence most band 6 writers leave out, how to write it in three steps, and a simple structure for any chart, table or diagram.

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 you describe a graph, table, chart, map or process diagram in at least 150 words, in about 20 minutes. The single sentence that most often separates band 6 from band 7 is the overview: a summary of the main trends or features, with no detailed numbers.

Why the overview matters

The public band descriptors are clear about this. A band 7 answer "presents a clear overview" with the main trends or differences identified. At band 6 an overview is only attempted, and band 5 answers tend to focus on details without the bigger picture. So if you leave the overview out, your Task Achievement score is likely to stay around band 5, however accurate your numbers are.

How to write an overview in 3 steps

  1. Find the biggest picture. What is the overall direction (rising, falling, stable)? Which item is highest or lowest overall?
  2. Find one more key feature. A big change, a crossing point, or one item behaving differently from the others.
  3. Write it without numbers. Start with "Overall," and combine both features in one or two sentences.

Worked example

Practice task: The line graph shows the percentage of households with internet access in three countries, A, B and C, between 2000 and 2020.

Practice data written by BandIQ for this example: Country A rose from 40% to 95%, Country B from 15% to 85%, and Country C from 5% to 60%, with C rising fastest after 2010.

Band 5–6 style (no real overview)

In 2000, 40% of households in Country A had internet access, 15% in Country B and 5% in Country C. By 2010 the figures were…

Band 7 style overview

Overall, internet access increased considerably in all three countries over the period, and Country A had the highest level of access throughout. The most rapid growth was seen in Country C after 2010.

The band 7 version gives the examiner the whole story in two sentences. The body paragraphs then add selected numbers to support it.

A simple Task 1 structure

  1. Introduction (1 sentence): paraphrase what the chart shows. Do not copy the question.
  2. Overview (1–2 sentences): the main trends, no numbers.
  3. Body 1: details and numbers for the first key feature.
  4. Body 2: details and numbers for the second key feature or comparison.

Common mistakes: giving your opinion or reasons ("because of better technology"), describing every single number, and leaving the overview out or putting numbers in it. Task 1 is a factual report.

Frequently asked questions

How many words should IELTS Academic Task 1 be?

At least 150 words. Aim for about 160 to 190 and spend around 20 minutes, because Task 2 counts for twice as much.

Should the overview go at the start or the end?

Either is accepted. Putting it straight after the introduction makes sure you do not run out of time before writing it.

Do I need a conclusion in Task 1?

No. Task 1 needs an overview, not a conclusion with opinions. Your overview can be placed at the end if you prefer.

Is General Training Task 1 the same?

No. In General Training, Task 1 is a letter of at least 150 words. See our guide to Academic vs General Training.
